Real Estate Salesperson's CE Requirements
18 Month Requirement (Applies to any licensee who applied for their license prior to
October 1, 2007
and received a conditional license).
A real estate salesperson must within eighteen months after issuance of license, complete a Real Estate Practice course and one other college level real estate course selected from among the following:
- Legal Aspects of Real Estate
- Real Estate Appraisal
- Real Estate Financing
- Escrows
- Property Management
- Real Estate Economics
- Business Law
- Accounting
- Real Estate Office Administration
- Mortgage Loan Brokering & Lending
- Computer Applications in Real Estate
- Common Interest Developments
These courses must be a three-semester unit course, or the quarter equivalent, completed at an accredited institution of higher learning; or, be an equivalent course of study offered by a private vocational school approved by the California Department of Real Estate.
Note: If the two courses are not completed within the prescribed eighteen month time period, the licensee cannot perform any activities that requires a real estate license. If proof of the two additional courses is not submitted within four years of the license issuance date, the license cannot be renewed and it will be necessary to re-qualify for a license by taking another State Examination.
Initial Four-Year Renewal

There are two different requirements based on when you were licensed.

First Requirement: Real estate salesperson’s who were licensed prior to 10/1/2007 and are renewing an original license for the first time, must complete five separate three-hour courses in:
- Agency.
- Ethics.
- Fair Housing.
- Trust Funds.
- Risk Management.
Second Requirement: Real estate salesperson’s who were licensed on or after
10/1/2007, and were required to have all three statutory/pre-licensing courses must complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:
- Five separate three-hour courses in Agency, Ethics, Fair Housing, Trust Funds, and Risk Management.
- 18 hours in the Consumer Protection category.
- The remaining clock hours may be in the Consumer Protection or Consumer Service category.
Subsequent Renewals (Every Four Years Thereafter)
All salesperson renewal applicants who have a four-year license must complete forty-five clock hours of approved continuing education courses within the four-year period preceding their license renewal. This must include:
- Minimum six-hour Combined Survey Course.
- A three-hour course in Risk Management.
- Eighteen hours in the category of Consumer Protection.
- The remaining hours may be in the Consumer Protection or Consumer Service category.
Note: The minimum six-hour Combined Survey Course can be replaced by the three-hour courses in Agency, Ethics, Fair Housing, & Trust Funds. This exceeds the minimum.
Late Renewal - A real estate licensee who fails to renew his license prior to the expiration date may renew it within two years after the expiration date. The licensee must meet the continuing education requirements and pay a late renewal fee.
